How to Remove a Background from a Photo with Gimp

Photoshop is a great tool for editing and manipulating your photos. But, it’s not the only one out there. Gimp also has some powerful photo editing tools you can use to edit and manipulate your images. One such tool is the clone stamp which lets you clone elements from one photo onto another, similar background. This way you can remove any unwanted objects or backgrounds from your picture without losing quality. Here are some simple steps to take to remove a background with Gimp.

Open your photo

Gimp is available for free from Google Play and the App Store. It’s free to download and use. If you need to charge, the option to do so is on the top left of the app. Step 1 When you first open the app, it’ll tell you a screen that shows the name and size of the photo you want to work on. Tap the star button in the bottom right. Step 2 You’ll be taken to the main editing screen of the app where you can choose one of the clone stamp effects. You can also click on the clone stamp button to get started.

When the clone stamp image appears in the lower left corner, simply drag your mouse up and down the shape to find the clone stamp you want to use. Step 3 At the bottom left, you can select a clone stamp frame to start working on.

Zoom in on the object you want to remove

1. Access the clone stamp tool by going to the tools menu, and selecting clone stamp. 2. Select a solid color or click on the clone stamp button to choose the color of the effect you want to create. In the screenshot above, the text is using the green clone stamp. 3. Set the size of the effect and position your cursor over your object. 4. Select a new background color

First, select a new background color from your file system by clicking on the color selector button. In my case, I chose pink background with an orange star shaped object on top. Paste a white background image in the Inspector window After selecting a new background, go ahead and paste a white background image in the Inspector window.

Go to the clone stamp icon, click on the clone stamp button and paste in your white background image in the Inspector window. Clone Stamp lets you edit an image of a more complex style with layers Click on Clone Stamp icon and select the changes you want to make. Pressing the Clone Stamp icon again will save your changes. Choose a type of clone stamp brush

One of the most important things you need to know to properly take advantage of the clone stamp is what type of clone stamp brush you want to use. Depending on your image you may want to choose a clone stamp brush based on the type of background you want to remove. Generally, Gimp’s default clone stamp brushes are very fast. They are meant for removing objects from photos and therefore speed is not their main advantage.

If you want to clone your background then you need to select a brush that will work better on it. Here are some recommended clones for different background types: With these brushes, you will be able to remove any object that sits on top of your object in the background of your photo.

Hide your clone stamp brush as per your taste with the “Hide Brush Settings” button at the top right of Gimp Pro Tip – If you have a couple of different clones of the same clone stamp brush available you can change the opacity of one clone brush to complete the removal of the background. To remove a background from the first image below, I had two copies of the clone stamp brush available.

Save and export your photo

First of all you have to save your photo as a .jpeg. We will also export this image as a .PSD file and we will use the clone stamp as a background, also saving it as a .jpeg. Here is a step by step guide on how to export your photo. Save the photo as .jpeg. Mark the camera or flash areas with a vertical line at the bottom Save the .jpeg as .JPG. Right click on the file and select ‘Copy Image As’. Save the file as .PSD.

Import the .PSD file into the Clone Stamp tool. Tap on the plus icon and select ‘Save As JPEG’. This will make the .jpeg into a JPEG file. Select the .jpeg in the list of the images. Select the clone stamp from the toolbar. Click on the + button to activate the clone stamp. The tool will save the second image in your PSD file.
